Box office hit anime movie 「Kimi no Na Wa」 “Your Name” reaches ¥20billion


Current hit animation movie 「君の名は。」”Kimi no Na WA” (English title “Your Name”) has reached an box office record revenue of ¥20 billion (approx. $170 million)  by early December of 2016.  Last time a Japanese featured film that has surpassed this mark was 15 years ago, which was also an animated film “Spirited Away” by well known director Miyazaki Hayao.  “Spirited Away” still holds the record of grossing ¥30.4 billion yen.

“Your Name” directed by Makoto Shinkai was also recently awarded best animated film of 2016 at the 42nd Los Angeles film Critics Award.  “Your Name” has also become the number 1 grossing film on opening day in China for a Japanese film (¥11.3 billion) and continues to do well.

Director Makoto Shinkai commented, “I want to express my deepest gratitude for everyone watching this film. Movies have taught me that at times movies have the power to connect with society. I would like to continue along with the audience and think about what kind of story and why it needs to be created now.”
